Description

This homemade Tanghulu recipe brings the magic of Chinese street food into your kitchen. With a glossy, crackling sugar shell and juicy fruit inside, it’s a simple and stunning dessert perfect for parties or just a sweet craving. Quick to make and fun to eat—treat yourself to this sweet-and-crunchy sensation!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 10 strawberries, washed and dried
  • 10 grapes (red or green), washed and dried
  • 1 small mandarin orange, peeled and segmented
  • 56 bamboo skewers
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Dry all fruits thoroughly and skewer 2–3 fruits per stick.

  2. Cook the Syrup: Combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until dissolved, then boil without stirring until it reaches 300°F.

  3. Dip the Fruit: Quickly dip each fruit skewer in the syrup, rotating to coat evenly.

  4. Cool and Harden: Set the dipped skewers on parchment paper and let the sugar shell harden.

  5. Serve Immediately: Tanghulu is best when the shell is freshly crackly.

Notes

  1. Avoid humid environments to keep the sugar shell crisp.
  2. Swap in blueberries, pineapple chunks, or kiwi for variety.
  3. Use gloves or handle skewers with tongs for safety when dipping into hot syrup.
